The first time my mother visited me in my own apartment she brought me flour, sugar and salt. It was a traditional housewarming gift to ensure I’d never go hungry and that my life would be sweet and flavorful.

My mother is gone and I’ve taken to baking sourdough bread. Bread requires three things: water, salt and flour. Baking sourdough bread is also a metaphor for life. Sourdough is a living thing. It must be fed. It must be tended to. It is completely unique and reflective of your own microbes. Your sourdough starter is not like anyone else’s starter. It tastes different and it behaves differently. Sourdough cannot be controlled. It can just be. Couples who bake bread together are happy!

Food is love, and the ability to feed myself and my friends and family gives my life tremendous meaning. The kitchen is the heart of every home. Everyone wants to hang out in the kitchen and I want you to feel good hanging out in yours. If you long to prepare simple and delicious meals but don’t know how to start, I can show you. Out of the Oven is devoted to helping you feel confident in your kitchen so you can stop ordering takeout and put real food on the table.

I use the same non-judgmental approach in your kitchen that I use with families I doula for.

beginner sourdough bread workshop: $300

An all-day, all-hands-on-deck affair. I feed you while we address everything you need to know to bake sourdough bread at home.

We cover:

Maintaining a starter, building a levain, dough mixing, stretching and folding, bulk rise, pre-shaping, shaping, final proof, scoring and baking. At the end of this experience, you will know what to expect from baking bread at home because you will have handled and observed dough at every stage of the process. You leave with your own jar of starter, a loaf of bread to bake at home, recipes and a resource list. PLUS WE EAT A LOT OF BREAD.

Registry

Cooking matters more to me than place settings, but I didn’t know that when I registered the first time.

Ten years later I remarried and this time I set my kitchen up for life: a roasting pan, chef knives, skillets, sauce pans, stock pot, sheet pans, platters, bowls. I’m really good at this now. I love helping people register. We meet where you live and talk though your lifestyle: the way you like to cook, the way you want to cook, if you like to entertain. We will get down and dirty so we can set up your kitchen to fit your lifestyle. Do you need fine china? Do you need stuff for a bar? What kind of room do you have? People want to give you things, let them give you what you need.
